Introduction

Music Class is an active experience. We spend time making music together in many ways. Sometimes we move, sometimes we sing, sometimes we play instruments, and sometimes we do all three!

Special care is taken to develop our most important instrument, the singing voice. But we also use many other instruments such as xylophones, glockenspiels, recorders, and drums to perform music.

Each year, students in grades K-8 showcase their musical skills in our St. Bernadette School Christmas Program.  This year, the program will be held on Monday, December 20 at 7:00 p.m.

To contact Mrs. Groba, call the school office or email her at barbaray@hotmail.com.

About the Teacher

Mrs. Barbara Groba has been teaching music for nine years, with seven of
those years at St. Bernadette School.  She is a graduate of Seton Hill
University, where she earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree
in 2001.

Currently she holds a Pennsylvania Instructional II Teaching Certificate and
has also completed two levels of Orff-Schulwerk Teacher Training at Ohio
State University.

Mrs. Groba’s instructional style is greatly influenced by the principles of
the Orff-Schulwerk Teaching Process.  In this style of teaching, instruction
starts from the things most children like to do, such as singing, chanting
rhymes, moving, clapping, playing games, and using many different types of
instruments.  In this way, children not only learn the fundamentals of music,
but also how to cooperate together as a music-making team.

In addition to her position at St. Bernadette School, Mrs. Groba also teaches at
St. Joseph School in Coraopolis.  She is an active member of the
American Orff Schulwek Association (AOSA) and also of its local chapter, the
Pittsburgh Golden Triangle Orff Association (PGTAOSA).
