 8th Grade Algebra
Algebra develops your thinking, specifically logic, patterns, problem solving, deductive and inductive reasoning.
Things You Need:
- A 1-inch 3-ring binder (Bring to class daily as well as your COVERED algebra textbook.)
- LOTS of filler paper
- Some graph paper
- Pencils (NO PENS! I will not grade anything written with pen in math class.)
- A calculator. This is optional. (Any basic calculator will be fine.)
-You DO NOT want to become overly dependent on a calculator.
4. Patience, a positive attitude and a sense of humor. (Bring to class daily.)
Class Procedure:
Each chapter of study focuses on a particular aspect of algebra. It is essential that you know and understand the information from your textbook and notes to be successful in this class. In each chapter, you will take notes with several examples, complete chapter quizzes (announced and unannounced), complete homework assignments, take chapter tests, and a midterm and final. In addition, your notebook will be collected each grading period and graded.
Notebook:
Your notebook (3-ring binder) must contain A LOT of filler paper with two different sections. The two sections must be titled 1) Notes/Examples and 2) Homework. Remember to keep your notebook neat, organized, and clean.
Notes/Examples:
These should be written in PENCIL with the date, section number and topic of the day’s lesson on the first line of the paper. You will use a separate piece of paper for each lesson. Also, you are to write down every example that I do.
Homework:
Homework will be assigned most nights. The only way to learn math is to PRACTICE it – at home, on your own. It will be graded periodically. I may grade homework once a week, three times a week or every day. Each of these assignments must be on filler paper with the appropriate heading. Remember to show all work on your homework …You will not be given full credit if you do not show work.
Quizzes:
Quizzes will be given periodically throughout each chapter consisting of approximately 20 to 25 points. I will announce quizzes, however some maybe unannounced.
Tests:
One test is given at the conclusion of each chapter. All tests are announced. A midterm and final will also be given.
Project/Paper:
Either a math project or math paper will be assigned during the year.
Grading:
Homework (checked for completeness (3-5 points) or for completeness and accuracy (points will vary))
Chapter tests
Midterm and final
Quizzes (announced and unannounced)
Notebook Check
Possible math project or math paper

I have VERY HIGH EXPECTATIONS for all students in terms of 1) having a positive, respectful attitude and 2) putting forth good effort. Not everyone likes math or is great at it, but as long as you try your best and keep up a good attitude, you will do well this year!
The following are some of the procedures/rules that will apply to our classroom. These procedures/rules will allow all of us to work comfortably and effectively and to focus on the reason we’re all here: to learn! Please read this information carefully so that you know what is expected, and we will be reviewing it in the days and weeks to come.
- Beginning of the class – You will enter the classroom, go quickly and quietly to your seat, and immediately sharpen your pencils if needed (ONE PERSON AT A TIME at the sharpener, please). Take out your homework that is due that day and put it on the corner of your desk. Then IMMEDIATELY begin your Bell-ringer in your notebook and continue working while I walk around the classroom checking homework. If you finish the Bell-ringer before I indicate that time is up, please sit quietly until everyone is finished and ready to begin.
- During class (class work) – All math work is done IN PENCIL, neatly, and completely. You will use a separate piece of paper for each lesson. On the first line of the paper, you will write the date, section number, and topic of the day’s lesson. On the next line, you will copy down the Bell-ringer and complete it. Then, you will copy down all the examples we do in class and anything else I tell you. If group work is assigned, please cooperate with all members.

- End of class – You will gather up all your belongings and line up in the classroom and proceed quietly to your next class. If your next class is still finishing up, wait quietly outside the door.
- Homework – Homework will be assigned most nights.
- Homework Policy – Homework is due at the beginning of class. If I am grading homework for accuracy and you do not have it done, you will have until the beginning of the next day’s math class to turn it in or until 3PM that day. After that, no credit will be given. If I am grading homework for only completeness (3-5 points) and you do not have it done, no credit will be given because I will be going over it in class. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to come ask me for your missed assignments or ask another reliable student. For the amount of days that you miss, you will have the same amount to turn in all assignments. (So, if you miss two days of school, you will have two days to turn in your homework.)
- Note: After the first few months, I will only accept late homework assignments until the beginning of the next math class. No credit will be given after that. (I will let you know when this policy will take effect.)
-Cheating on any work in math will result in a zero. It is your responsibility to make sure that no one cheats off your paper. DO YOU OWN WORK, IT’S AN ORIGINAL!
- Notebook Check – You will turn in your notebook each quarter for a grade. It should be neat, organized, clean, and have every bell-ringer, example, and homework assignment.
- Assessments – Quizzes will be given periodically throughout each chapter consisting of approximately 20 to 25 points. I will announce quizzes, however some may be unannounced. You should always be prepared for a pop quiz. You will take a chapter test at the end of each chapter. Also, you will take a midterm (before Christmas) and a final.
- Projects/papers – You will complete a math project or a math paper throughout the year.
LASTLY, MY NUMBER ONE RULE IS: Math is done in PENCIL! I will not grade anything done in pen.
ONE MORE RULE: After you are done working out a math problem on any homework assignment, quiz or test, put a BOX around your final answer. If you do not BOX your answer, I will assume you are not done working on that problem. Also, I do not want to have to search everywhere for your answer. So, please remember the BOX!!
If you need extra help at any point in time, SEE ME IMMEDIATELY! Please do not wait until it's too late! I will do everything in my power to help you succeed, but I cannot do it alone. You MUST do everything in YOUR power, too!
Students: Please sign and date below to indicate that you have read and understand these rules and procedures and that you agree to help make our classroom a great place to learn by following these guidelines. Thank you.
