Grade 3

Religion and Language Arts

Light your way through third grade with a smile on your face.

I have been teaching at
St. Bernadette School for 23 years.  My philosophy is to help each child be the best they can be.  I emphasize the importance of smiling to enjoy learning without “stressing out”.

RELIGION- “We Believe” by Sadlier   Emphasis is placed on the role of the Church; the Church Year, the sacraments, knowledge of the saints, the Rosary, prayers and scripture.  Most activities are completed in class.  Your child may bring their book home at any time.  We will often complete art activities to correspond with the lesson.

READING – “Invitations to Literacy” by Houghton Mifflin - The literature is organized in groups called themes, with a total of 6 themes throughout the school year.  Selected vocabulary, reading skills, grammar skills, and writing skills are incorporated into each selection.  The practice book reinforces the skills taught.

COMPREHENSION PLUS– These workbooks will be used in class as well as assigned for homework.
Reading skills as well as specific comprehension skills enhance  the literature program.

To encourage reading for enjoyment as well as information, your child will be reading books in class and at home.  Each student will receive a booklet to record the number of minutes read on their own time.  These minutes will be counted for the class and turned into miles.  The class will be excited as they travel from one state to another with their reading miles.

SPELLING – The spelling list of words and sentences will be given to each student on Monday.  They will copy the words and sentences into their spelling notebook.   They may keep their list at home for study purposes.  There will be a test every Friday.

ENGLISH – Grammar skills are incorporated in the Literacy activity workbook.  We will be working from the new English textbook and workbook re-enforcing all grammar skills taught in the integrated Literature curriculum.   Writing skills will be incorporated into the daily lessons.  Beginning, middle and ending concepts will be emphasized.

HANDWRITING- Cursive writing will be emphasized in 3rd grade.  The students will be writing in their workbooks, on handwriting paper, and at the chalkboard for daily class work.  Cursive writing can be a difficult task for third graders, but with practice and repetition, your child will actually enjoy writing in cursive.

As you can see, your third grader will be extremely busy, but will need to smile throughout the year, enjoy learning, and avoid stress in order to learn more!!!
