Welcome to Mrs. Scarpino’s First Grade Classroom

text

“Children have a certain way
of growing bigger everyday,
But these little hands
and this special smile
will stay in our hearts a long, long while.”

My name is Nicole Scarpino and I am one of the first grade teachers. I attended Duquesne University and earned a Bachelors Degree in Elementrary Education. I have been teaching since 2000. I have taught Kindergarten, 1st, and 4th grade. I love teaching first grade and watching the children progress and become independent. I strive to provide a wonderful learning experience and for each child to reach their full potential.

Language Arts

First grade students will extend their abilities in reading, phonics, writing, spelling, and handwriting. This is an exciting and busy year as skills are expanded through a variety of settings, enabling each student to develop oral language and communication skills that lead to becoming independent readers and writers.

Mathematics

In our first grade classroom math focuses on the development and expansion of fluent skills and conceptual understanding in all areas, including addition and subtraction facts, fact families, money, time, measurements, and geometry. Multiple hands-on manipulatives are used.

Religion

The spiritual growth of first grade students continues as we learn about how God Loves Us. Children will be active participants in living and upholding the Christian values of our Catholic faith.
