Sixth Grade 2009-2010 Sixth grade will be full of adventure and personal growth as we travel along the highway of learning. I will be your travel guide for Religion (homeroom students only), Social Studies, and Language Arts (except for English). Off to a Good Start Please remember to replenish your supplies (especially erasable pens and filler paper) throughout the school year. Religion We will attend weekly liturgy. You may add to your liturgical experiences by being a cantor, lector, and/or altar server. We will also deepen our faith through community service. Language Arts The four components of language arts – reading, writing, listening, and speaking – will be developed along the sixth-grade highway. You will encounter weekly spelling and vocabulary tests as well as numerous special projects. You will develop effective communication skills through various assignments, including original short stories. We will also read novels during the year. The Egypt Game, Tuck Everlasting, and Number the Stars are three novels we will enjoy this year. (I have copies for you to use.) Through our literature, both in the Triumphs anthology and the novels, we will explore such topics as the Holocaust, ancient Egypt, and world history. Social Studies You will encounter quizzes and chapter tests. You will draw maps, maintain a social studies folder, and participate in various special projects. We will occasionally enliven our tours of some countries with special celebrations. Because the curriculums of social studies and language arts will be integrated, our travels should be a lot more memorable.
We will have a great journey this year.
