Sixth Grade                                                    2009-2010
Mrs. Frankola                                                  Room 310
Oh, the places we will go this year!!

Sixth grade will be full of adventure and personal growth as we travel along the highway of learning.  I will be your travel guide for Religion (homeroom students only), Social Studies, and Language Arts (except for English).

Off to a Good Start
Check the school supplies list (on school website) and purchase what you will need for your travels through sixth grade.   [Although the supply list states you will need two spiral notebooks for my classes, I would really prefer that you use composition notebooks.  If you want to use spiral notebooks, please don’t buy multiple-subject notebooks or ones with lots of pages.  Seventy pages or so in each notebook will be plenty.]

Please remember to replenish your supplies (especially erasable pens and filler paper) throughout the school year.

Religion
We Believe – We Are God’s People (published by Sadlier) is our textbook.  We will study the history of God’s people and our faith, focusing on the Old Testament and the early Church.  We will also study the liturgical year, Catholic Vision of Love, and saints.  Prayer and scripture will be a strong focus.  Assessment will include tests, journals, and special activities.

We will attend weekly liturgy.  You may add to your liturgical experiences by being a cantor, lector, and/or altar server.  We will also deepen our faith through community service.

Language Arts
Our reading anthology is entitled Triumphs (published by Houghton Mifflin).  We will triumphantly journey through all six themes, which include a variety of literature such as fiction, expository prose, and poetry.

The four components of language arts – reading, writing, listening, and speaking – will be developed along the sixth-grade highway.  You will encounter weekly spelling and vocabulary tests as well as numerous special projects.  You will develop effective communication skills through various assignments, including original short stories.

We will also read novels during the year.  The Egypt Game, Tuck Everlasting, and Number the Stars are three novels we will enjoy this year.  (I have copies for you to use.)

Through our literature, both in the Triumphs anthology and the novels, we will explore such topics as the Holocaust, ancient Egypt, and world history.

Social Studies
People, Places, and Change (published by Holt) is our main travel tool as we discover world history, geography, and culture.  We will visit every continent and nearly every country in the world!!

You will encounter quizzes and chapter tests.  You will draw maps, maintain a social studies folder, and participate in various special projects.  We will occasionally enliven our tours of some countries with special celebrations.

Because the curriculums of social studies and language arts will be integrated, our travels should be a lot more memorable.
